Political/Economic Research and Analysis Officer

The Consulate-General of Japan in Melbourne is seeking a Political and Economic Research Analyst. Reporting to Japanese Consuls, the successful candidate will examine issues related to Australian political and economic affairs, and discharge other related duties as required.
 
Position Details:
Job title: Research Analyst
Employment status: Full time 
Working hours: 9:00-17:00 (Overtime on occasion as required, including some weekend and evening work)
Recess: 1 hour (13:00-14:00) 
Working place: Level 25, 570 Bourke Street, Melbourne, Victoria
Salary: Determined according to your personal history and professional experience. Wages paid monthly. 
Holidays officially observed: Saturdays, Sundays and other holidays decided by the Consulate
Employment period: Two year term renewable upon mutual agreement
 
Primary Accountabilities:
  1. Research, analysis and preparation of reports on domestic political, economic, commercial, and trade developments relevant to our jurisdiction;
  2. Media monitoring, to keep abreast of important political and economic events;
  3. Liaison with government departments, institutions, academia and other bodies;
  4. Foster and maintain an extensive range of contacts to ensure an effective information network for the advancement and support of Japanese interests;
  5. Secretarial support for Consul- General, including scheduling, meeting management and the drafting of correspondence;
  6. Preparation of speeches and letters;
  7. Working at consulate events;
  8. Other duties as required.
 
Key Selection Criteria:
  1. Detailed knowledge of Australian political and economic systems, particularly in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.
  2. Demonstrated research skills including highly-developed written and oral communication skills and administrative competency.
  3. Ability to perform effectively and maintain flexibility within a team environment.
  4. Demonstrated diplomatic skills, capable of maintaining working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. The capacity to show courtesy and tact at all times.
  5. English fluency.
  6. High standards of trustworthiness, discretion and a firm understanding of the privacy required within a diplomatic mission.
  7. Ability to coordinate and manage events.
  8. Public speaking skills.
 
Desired Attributes:
 
1. Japanese language ability. 
2. Experience with protocol and diary management. 
3. Experience working with Japanese people.
