The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is designed to promote mutual understanding between Japan and other nations, foster international exchange at the local level and enhance foreign language education in Japan.
There are two types of positions*:
- Assistant Language Teacher (ALT)
assisting in English language education in Japanese schools (teaching experience and Japanese language ability not essential). - Coordinator for International Relations (CIR)
assisting in international activities carried by Japanese local government offices (high level of Japanese language ability required).
*Contracts for both position types are for a minimum of 1 year and start in April (some) or July (majority).
The 2020 JET Programme Information Sessions
Evening information sessions will be held from 6 to 7.30pm at the following dates and venues:
Tuesday 15th October - Consulate-General of Japan, Level 25, 570 Bourke St, Melbourne
Thursday 17th October - Mercure Grosvenor Hotel, 125 North Terrace, Adelaide
Monday 21st October - Salamanca Inn, 10 Gladstone St, Hobart
Thursday 24th October - Consulate-General of Japan, Level 25, 570 Bourke St, Melbourne
*Free entry but bookings essential - please contact the Consulate-General of Japan via Email or telephone.
Daytime Information sessions will be held at various universities and bookings are not required.

The scheduled time-line for the 2019 JET Programme recruitment are as follows:
- Applications are due on Friday 9 November 2018 for reviews by the Embassy of Japan in Canberra. Notification of progression to the interview stage will be given in January 2019 to successful applicants and the interviews will be held between the end of January and the beginning of February 2019 in Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide.
- Applicants selected for April departure will be short-listed and announced in March 2019. Other interview results will be announced in April 2019 (i.e., notification will be sent to those applicants selected as either a shortlisted participant or alternate for July departure, as well as to those who are not selected). Applicants selected for April departure will arrive in Japan on Sunday 14 April 2019. Placement notification will be sent in May 2019 to those applicants selected for July departure. They will arrive in Japan on Sunday 28 July 2019.
* Please note that applicants must be an Australian citizen (i.e., an Australian passport holder, not just a permanent resident) where recruitment and selection procedures will take place. Interviews are not conducted outside Australia, including Japan.
