Remarks by Consul-General Ms Haneda at The 2014 JET Programme Farewell Function on Friday 25 July 2014

Good evening.

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone tonight to honour 19 new JETs who will depart for Japan tomorrow.

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme started in 1987, with the aim of promoting grass-roots international exchange between Japan and other nations. The JET Programme has grown significantly over the past 28 years, as the number of participants has increased from 848 from 4 countries to 4,476 from 42 countries. Among the 127 Australians joining the Programme this year, 23 are from Victoria, 3 from Tasmania and 5 from South Australia.

The JET Programme, through its numerous educational and cultural activities, has greatly strengthened the mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Australia. I believe that the new JETs-and I believe some of you will be going to rural areas-will all have a wonderful time in Japan surrounded by Japanese people who may not be able to speak much English, but who will always be willing to help you.

On this occasion, I would like to express my appreciation to the JET Alumni Association; CLAIR; the interview panel of judges; the Japanese School of Melbourne; and the various people who have supported the Programme.

I would also like to thank Mr Brad Battin and Mr Steve Herbert for their warm support towards strengthening the Australia-Japan relationship. Japanese Prime Minister Abe recently visited Australia and was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Abbott and by the Australian people. I appreciate that the Parliamentary Friends of Japan in Victoria are always strong supporters of our activities.

In closing, I would like to wish all of the participants of this year’s JET Programme good health and the making of many Japanese friends in your local area.

Thank you.
